Why I Became a Financial Advisor

Why I Became a Financial Advisor

Most people have at least one skill that comes easy to them, something they are born with or innately understand. For me, that skill is finance. I used to believe that understanding finances and managing money was common knowledge, but through the experiences of friends and family, I learned this is not always the case.

My father passed away at the young age of 56 years old. Among other factors, financial stress had taken a significant toll on him. I saw through my father’s experience how money issues can impact a person, their family, and their health. I also saw how to avoid these mistakes, stay on the right path, and achieve a successful financial outcome with the right guidance.

Now I want to share my knowledge and financial skills with as many people as possible. I became a financial advisor because I realized many people could use the help I had to offer. That is why I am passionate and committed to educating others about their finances, to help them avoid the mistakes and heartaches I have seen too many endure.

My Path to Financial Tranquility

Realizing early on that I wanted to pursue a career in the financial world, I obtained a bachelor’s degree in finance and then a master’s degree in personal financial planning. I didn’t initially become a financial advisor, starting my career working for financial institutions that did not have the clients’ best interest in mind. I worked hours on end, only to take home my annual salary without being recognized for the extra time I put in or receiving the satisfaction of working directly with clients and helping them meet their financial goals.

I came to the point where I wanted to control my own destiny. I wanted to forge my own path and be rewarded for the effort I put in without having to beg for raises and promotions. I also wanted to see a direct impact on the clients I worked with. Eventually, I met and married my wife, whose father started his independent Registered Investment Advisor firm, Tranquility Path Investment Advisors, LLC. My father-in-law, Henry, showed me a way I could help others achieve their financial freedom while also pursuing my own.

At that time, I was strong-willed about my investment philosophy and didn’t buy into what I now know is the “active” trading model. When I met with Henry for the first time, I told him that if our philosophies did not agree, I would not work with him. As it turned out, we were in perfect agreement! Since that time, Henry showed me how he helps clients from all walks of life achieve financial success and how small mistakes can lead to financial ruin as you get older. I saw this pattern of mistakes occurring right in front of me time and again with my parents, my extended family, and others around me. Knowing we would be a great fit as partners, I became a financial advisor in 2012 when I joined his firm.

Since then, I have earned my CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in 2020 as well as additional designations, including Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor℠, Master Planner Advanced StudiesSM, and Accredited Behavioral Finance Professional℠. I now serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Tranquility Path Investment Advisors and get to work with retirees, pre-retirees, and younger clients who will become the next generation of retirees.

Why I Love What I Do

I am fortunate to get to do what I do as a living—helping people overcome one of life’s greatest stressors: financial planning. There are many things I love about my career, but one of the most fulfilling aspects of this job is when a client hugs me and thanks me. I see them breathe a huge sigh of relief as if a heavy load has just been lifted off their shoulders. Knowing I can help people and improve their lives through financial planning is what drives me to work hard every day. I want to exceed my clients’ expectations and provide great value to them.

It is important that my clients feel comfortable and safe with me, knowing I’m empathetic and compassionate about their situation and that I genuinely care about their financial well-being. I’m not pushy or trying to sell them a product just to make a buck, and I don’t exaggerate outcomes. One of the greatest assets of working with our firm is that our clients have a coach to walk them through the ups and downs of their financial life.
